Culture Shock?

Well, we arrived back in the US yesterday. It is true…all missionaries tell us, “things are so different when you go back to the states than they were when you left for the field.” You do undergo some “culture shock” re-entering your home country. Strange, but true. The first thing I said in the airport parking lot was, “All of the cars here are huge!” Then, driving down the interstate I couldn’t believe how nice and smooth the roads are!
This morning, I had a good laugh at my middle son, Eli. He sat in the living room this morning, staring at the ceiling. He said, “Daddy, it’s a helicopter.” Well, it wasn’t really a helicopter. It was a ceiling fan. Eli was also sheepish on the trip back to the US. He kept staring at everyone speaking English. He even would ask Melissa from time to time, “Mommy, they speak Portuguese?” Melissa would laugh and say, “No, Eli. They speak English.”
We thank the Lord for a good flight back. It was good to hear the border patrol officer in customs say to me, “Welcome home.”
